Should George Zimmerman be charged with the murder of Trayvon Martin?
This story has been talked about across the United States for weeks now, but in case you're unfamiliar with what happened, a man named George Zimmerman called the police when he saw a suspicious-looking man in his neighborhood. He called the police and reported Trayvon Martin. The dispatcher told Zimmerman to wait for officers to arrive but Zimmerman ignored the suggestion and followed Martin, ultimately shooting and killing him.
Martin, who was black, was later found to be unarmed, and while Zimmerman insisted that Martin had attacked him and he acted in self-defense, public outrage spread natonwide and many people felt as if Zimmerman acted out because of Martin's skin color. Although Zimmerman initially was not charged with any crime, he is now expected to be charged with second-degree murder.
Some people feel as if authorities are caving to the pressure of thousands of outraged citizens and are placing the blame on Zimmerman to diffuse the situation, while others feel that Zimmerman is responsible for Martin's death and has a history of questionable behavior regarding people of color. What's your opinion, is charging Zimmerman the right thing to do or is it a knee-jerk reaction to an unfortunate accident?
