A middle school in Pennsylvania has put a ban on wearing Ugg boots after it was discovered that students were hiding cell phones in them, which were disrupting classes. Is the ban extreme or appropriate?

This is right in line with every other bit of dress code reform I have seen since high school. When I was in school, most places began banning hats and other head coverings because they had become associated with street gangs. Certain hair colors were banned from being allowed because they were considered a distraction in class (a rule brought back up in England this week as well.) The deal is, if you use any type of clothing to distract the classroom experience, then you face the consequences. If the kids didn't want them banned, then they shouldn't have been using them to literally boot leg stuff into the class room.

thats just stupid..kids keep their phones in their pants pockets, are they gonna ban them next?

There is a difference in having a phone tucked into a boot where you can reach down and grab it with little attention rather than having it in a backpack, purse, or pants pocket where it would be a bit more noticeable if you were to try and get it out. Obviously, if it was as simple as hiding them in their pockets then the kids wouldn't be using their boots to hide them.

you can hid a cell phone pretty much any where, your pants, your socks if you have long pants, and for girls a popular place to put them is in their bra. We have cell phones and we're gonna use them, if they ban every item of clothing we hide them in, we're gonna end up naked.

Or they could just stop banning clothing and start confiscating cell phones as one school in my area did. It's amazing how fast the problem with cell phones in class stopped once parents realized their kids were coming back home without their expensive toys.

To clarify the process, once a student was caught using a cell phone they were sent to the principal's office where they filed the phone away with the student's information and it was to remain there until the parent came to pick it up or signing off on a letter noting what was going on. If that was the case, then the phone would still not be returned to the student until the end of the school week as a method to avoid forgery on the letters.
