How Should the National Anthem Sound?
Background:
Shai Warfield-Cross was recently told that her rendition of "The Star-Spangled Banner" was not traditional enough. What's new, right? Today the anthem is constantly being twisted to match different pop voices. Football games, public assemblies, and television showings constantly have people singing the anthem in a way that matches this generation of music. This isn't necessarily a bad thing. Shai has a pretty voice, but it is very Alicia Keyes-esque. Should people with these voices bend the anthem to match their voices, or should they bend their voices to match the anthem? The people against Shai said when she sang traditional she sounded "beautiful". Some people said she sounded better when she sang it the way she liked. Is this situation taking away her rights? This begs the question of how the anthem should sound. Should everyone sound the same, or should people bring their voice to the anthem? Personally, I like the sound of the traditional anthem, but I would never be in favor of forcing someone to sing in an unfamiliar way. Individualism is what America was built on; we should not all have to sound the exact same, because we, as Americans, are not the same.
