Tina Fey's Anti-Palin Comments Edited Out of Acceptance Speech

Comedy writer and actress Tina Fey recently received the Mark Twain Prize for American Humor, yet PBS's Sunday night broadcast of the event seemed to censor some of her less-than-positive remarks about former Alaska governor and Vice-Presidential candidate Sarah Palin. Despite the broadcast's executive producer insisting the edits weren't politically motivated, based on what was taken out of Fey's speech, you can't help but wonder if they intentionally did it to avoid controversy.

The 30 Rock creator/writer/actor said in her acceptance speech:

"And, you know, politics aside, the success of Sarah Palin and women like her is good for all women - except, of course --those who will end up, you know, like, paying for their own rape 'kit 'n' stuff, But for everybody else, it's a win-win. Unless you're a gay woman who wants to marry your partner of 20 years - whatever. But for most women, the success of conservative women is good for all of us. Unless you believe in evolution. You know - actually, I take it back. The whole thing's a disaster."

During Sunday night's television broadcast, Fey's above remarks were edited out, but producers left in a more ass-kissy and vanilla remark about Palin:

"I would be a liar and an idiot if I didn't thank Sarah Palin for helping get me here tonight. My partial resemblance and her crazy voice are the two luckiest things that ever happened to me. All kidding aside, I'm so proud to represent American humor, I am proud to be an American, and I am proud to make my home in the 'not real' America. And I am most proud that during trying times, like an orange [terror] alert, a bad economy or a contentious election, that we as a nation retain our sense of humor."

"Is she making fun of me? I can't tell."

Peter Kennedy, an executive producer of the awards broadcast, insisted that they had no problems with Fey's speech but had to edit parts out due to the length of the taping in order to fit the show into PBS's 90-minute slot. He also asserted that they "snipped from everyone," but I don't know if I buy that excuse. Tina Fey is one of the more well-known names in Hollywood, plus she's getting an "American Humor" award, so you'd think they'd want to show her speech in its entirety because she's a popular figure and because there's a high chance of it being funny. Cutting out the half-joking political remarks seems a little too censorshippy (no, that's not actually a word -- deal with it) for my tastes. What do you think?

Do you think Tina Fey's Palin comments were edited because of politics or run time?

Debate It! 1

With the recent flap about the firing of Juan Williams, and the resulting calls from conservatives to cut federal funding to PBS (they're not funded by the government, except through certain grants, but whatever), it does seem like PBS is pandering by cutting Tina Fey's speech. They cut everyone's speeches? Fine. But the honoree's? Isn't that the one speech that should have been broadcast in toto? I'm very disappointed in you, PBS.
