Ricky Gervais Trolls the Golden Globes Hard

Last night was the 68th annual Golden Globe Awards show, which celebrated crap like Easy A and Red under the guise of being cinematic masterpieces. Think of the Golden Globes as the Stephen or Daniel Baldwin to the Academy Awards' Alec. British comedian/actor/writer Ricky Gervais once again hosted the evening's events, as he had done last year. His jokes were scathing and packed a hell of a punch at the expense of many A-list actors and actresses.

Here's his monologue, which pokes fun at Charlie Sheen, the stars of The Tourist, Cher, Sex and the City 2, and certain possibly closeted "famous Scientologists":



Now Popeater is reporting that the Hollywood Foreign Press is furious over the jokes Gervais made last night. One member of the HFPA reportedly said that he's not going to be invited back to host in 2012 because he "humiliated the organization," and that he can forget about any of his future projects ever getting nominated for a Golden Globe (a threat I doubt he cares about). I'm not sure what the HFPA was expecting with hiring Gervais to host again -- the comedian himself stated the following in an interview prior to Sunday's awards show:
"I'm going all out," Gervais says. "They will never invite me back again. ... If they wanted someone to read an Autocue, there's lots of better people than me at that. And they look better. So whenever I'm hired, I'm hired for my particular cocktail of skills -- or lack of them."

Is the Hollywood Foreign Press really that surprised? Seems to me like that got what they signed up for. I find their reaction a bit odd -- don't you think his scripts would have gone through an approval process? Either they gave his bits the thumbs up and are now pretending to be furious after the fact once they received complaints from different actors' agents, or they somehow thought that despite knowing what sort of humor Gervais leans towards, they'd trust that he'd kiss up to celebrities and pander to their egos the night of the show.

That should read, "Ricky Gervais doesn't Troll hard enough at the Golden Globes". I thought it was hilarious.

@jogden I think he's funny. The British (original) Office is one of the greatest shows of all time, and the Ricky Gervais Show podcasts are hysterical.

Yeah, this is pretty egregious on the media's behalf. the Golden Globe people know they were getting David Brent. His speech last year was just like this one. Also, pretty sure he doesn't give a shit about Hollywood money. That's the beauty of making all your money overseas. Go Ricky!
