Is Your Life Worth $93,000?

Cancer is a terrible disease, and eradicating it from the body comes at a hefty price. While most treatments can cost upwards of $100k a year, the Associated Press reports that a new kind of drug therapy is available for the low low price of $93,000.

The drug, called Provenge, can reportedly add "four months' survival, on average, for men with incurable prostate tumors." The government is debating as to whether basic Medicare will cover the cost of the drug, and since insurance companies typically follow Medicare's footsteps, time will tell as to whether or not the treatment with the hefty price tag will be covered.

This "cancer vaccine" is a one-time treatment that "train[s] the immune system to fight prostate tumors." It's kind of like the basic training scene from Starship Troopers shrunk down to immune system size.

"Come on, white blood cells! You wanna live forever?!"

Since each "vaccine" is customized to work with each individual patient, it takes time to create them. Patients who want the treatment are forced to enter a lottery , Shirley Jackson-style (only the end result is hopefully life and not getting stoned to death as in the short story).

How much is your life worth to you? If you had cancer and were told that a treatment costing $93,000 could at worst extend your lifespan by a few months and at best eradicate the disease, would you shell out the money for it if insurance refused coverage? Could you afford it, and if not, would you find a way?

Would you shell out $93k for potentially life-saving cancer treatment?

Debate It! 2

I wouldn't shell out $93k for four months of survival, that's for sure. If I could add years or decades, maybe.
