Yesterday marks the 30th anniversary of an Australian woman allegedly getting her baby stolen by a dingo in the Outback (not of the Steakhouse variety -- if it were, the dingo would have probably made off with a bloomin' onion instead). The mother, Lindy Chamberlain-Creighton, "celebrated" the anniversary by posting an open letter on her website asking for her daughter's death certificate to be updated with "dingo" as the cause of death.

Trolldingo says "Problem?"

This woman has been a pop culture punchline since she first made the claim that a dingo took her baby. Not only did she serve four years of a life sentence for the disappearance of her child before being released when a piece of her daughter's clothing was found in the Outback, her tragedy was turned into, according to Wikipedia:

  • a TV movie
  • a feature film
  • a TV miniseries
  • a play
  • a concept album by Australian band The Paradise Motel
  • an opera
  • numerous books.
At least she was portrayed by Meryl Streep -- that's what you call looking on the bright side! (Well, I suppose the bright side would be "not having my daughter eaten by dingoes," but Meryl Streep is a decent consolation prize.)

The incident's also been mentioned or parodied on Seinfeld, Family Guy, Two and a Half Men, The Simpsons, Frasier, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Priscilla, Queen of the Desert, and Tropic Thunder. After having to endure an untold amount of pop culture jokes and countless "deen-goah ayt mah bay-behhhh!"s in painful Australian accent, methinks the country should just update the death certificate already.

What do you think, should they finally close the case and say a dingo was responsible for Azaria Chamberlain's death, or are you still unconvinced 30 years later?

Should the death certificate get updated?
