Gap's New Logo Makes Old Navy Look Like Haute Couture

Let me backtrack a little bit. Remember this?

Tropicana replaced their simple yet fun and easily recognizable orange-with-a-straw-in-it design with a "looks like the generic brand of orange juice" remodel that attracted criticism, hurt sales, and ultimately forced them to revert back to their original design. It's the age-old adage of "If it ain't broke, don't fix it," which are wise words for any well-established brand who has no reason to "reimagine" itself.
Gap must not have caught this case study. I'm guessing the CEO was holed up in his theater room, drunk on appletinis and watching a loop of Gap swing commercials from the mid-90s, wondering how he can make the clothing company seem hip and current again. Then, lightbulb! Redesign the logo! And thus, we went from this:

To this:

Are they trying to seem trendy and hip by adopting Helvetica? Why don't they just go full hipster and switch their logo to a Wilco album cover? The feedback hasn't been great -- the logo's been compared to Microsoft clipart and has been described as being too generic.
I'll, of course, leave it up to you guys. What do you think, is it a refreshing change for Gap or do they need to revert back to the tried and true classic logo?
