Gap's New Logo Makes Old Navy Look Like Haute Couture

The marketing geniuses at Gap must not have been following the Tropicana logo disaster from last year, because they've gone ahead and redesigned their famously simple and classic logo and it's drawn more criticism than jean shorts on men (or "jorts," as they're so appropriately coined). The company debuted the new logo design on their website and instantly unleashed a floodgate of Haterade from designers, bloggers, journalists, and people with eyes.

Let me backtrack a little bit. Remember this?

Tropicana replaced their simple yet fun and easily recognizable orange-with-a-straw-in-it design with a "looks like the generic brand of orange juice" remodel that attracted criticism, hurt sales, and ultimately forced them to revert back to their original design. It's the age-old adage of "If it ain't broke, don't fix it," which are wise words for any well-established brand who has no reason to "reimagine" itself.

Gap must not have caught this case study. I'm guessing the CEO was holed up in his theater room, drunk on appletinis and watching a loop of Gap swing commercials from the mid-90s, wondering how he can make the clothing company seem hip and current again. Then, lightbulb! Redesign the logo! And thus, we went from this:

To this:

Are they trying to seem trendy and hip by adopting Helvetica? Why don't they just go full hipster and switch their logo to a Wilco album cover? The feedback hasn't been great -- the logo's been compared to Microsoft clipart and has been described as being too generic.

I'll, of course, leave it up to you guys. What do you think, is it a refreshing change for Gap or do they need to revert back to the tried and true classic logo?

Which Gap logo do you like better?

Debate It! 5

I didn't like the brand to begin with, so anything that screws them royally is good by me.

I like the old much better. If it works, why fix it?

Whether you like the store or not, the original logo was timeless. Changing the logo was a bad idea, it looks like a facebook ripoff for the gay community that would offend the gay community because it's such a bad logo.

Posted By Bonestamp,

I love Helvetica for its simplicity, which makes it stylish. However, here it's just plain boring, something that could be drawn in paint in literally two minutes. And what's with the random blue square in the corner? The former logo had that 90s simplicity that held up well 15 years later; I don't get why they felt it needed to be changed. See the Target logo for the right way to use Helvetica.
