Rumors had been circulating that Facebook had been developing a "Gmail killer" codenamed Project Titan. Today, their secret project has finally been unveiled, and it's indeed a new messaging system. This new "modern" messaging system combines regular email, Facebook messages, instant messages, and SMS into one giant ball of messagey goodness. Also, it doesn't seem to be a "Gmail killer" so much as a "Gmail integrater," which is a smart way to get users to spend even more time on Facebook instead of going to other sites or, heaven forbid, venturing outside and interacting with the real world.

The Facebook blog announced the new messaging system today in a flufftacular piece of written schmaltz:

"Imagine the kind of family you might see in a modern American sitcom: loving parents trying to maintain a family unit with a teenager engrossed in text messaging, a college-aged child who is always chatting online, and various wacky relatives who spend their days sending "funny" emails to the family.

This is an admittedly exaggerated stereotype but one we see every day in movies, TV and advertising because most of us can relate to parts of it. Between mobile devices and the Internet we can be more connected today than ever before, but there is still a feeling that the technology can also act as a barrier between us. When I want to share with someone it should be as simple as deciding who I want to share with and what I want to say. It should feel more like a human conversation."

It's basically the beginnings of an infomercial. "Want to communicate with your friends but tired of seeing their ugly face in person? Are you confused by the thousands of different messaging systems out there and wish someone would combine them all to make your life easier? Don't get mad, get the Facebook MessageMate!" The visual would be of a frazzled woman trying to carry a cell phone, laptop, and a bundle of papers before ultimately dropping them all into a huge mess and throwing her hands into the air in exaggerated frustration.

Facebook's messaging system boasts choice of delivery method, organizing messages, and storing conversations. Basically, it offers up exactly everything a decent email client can do. You've done it again, Zuckerberg.

Are you excited about Facebook's new messaging system?
