Did Scientology Make Katie Holmes a Star?

It was recently announced that Katie Holmes would be filing charges against Star Magazine to the tune of $50 million as a result of a lurid headline which stated that the Scientologist was actually in the throes of an "addiction nightmare" and that she couldn't possibly leave Tom Cruise as a result, which of course implied that she wants to in the first place.
On the cover was a picture of the actress looking...well, like she was coming off a long night and had just left a yoga class. The obvious insinuation, of course, was that the actress is a total drug addict and that the paparazzi caught her after a binge or in the middle of a hangover.
The reality of the article? One of Scientology's many...interesting practices is the use of what's called an "e-meter," which somehow releases endorphins. Or something. And that surge of endorphins can be addictive. Or something. So naturally, this leads the editors to concoct the headline that Katie Holmes is an addict and can't possible leave Tom Cruise. Cuz, ya know, he might as well be her drug dealer now. Or something.

Of course, Star is fighting this lawsuit, stating that it did no wrong. Ehhh, it seems like they fudged the truth of the article a little bit to pull a good headline. But isn't that the point of a tabloid? Ever since the dawn of time, tabloids have been fabricating garbage and calling it news. Still, it seems like a win for Holmes would be a win for all of those poor, put-upon celebrities who are tormented by false claims in the news. It would be a real vindication for all those suffering millionaires.
Or something.
The fact is, the only reason Katie Holmes is even in the public eye anymore is because of her marriage to Tom Cruise and her sudden conversion to Scientology shortly after they met. Could she have indeed made a bigger career for herself had she not married and taken time off to be with her family? Possibly.
But honestly, was she an actress who set the world on fire? Eh. All I seem to remember from "Dawson's Creek" is Holmes's face-making and hair-tucking. Constantly. Every episode. Otherwise? Meh.
Scientology is the real star here, kids, and always will be due as long as Tom Cruise is, like, the pint-sized poster boy for the cult religion. And Katie Holmes will never be just an actress or just a wife or just a mother. First and always, she's a Scientologist. Which is kind of a shame.
