Billy Ray Cyrus Cries: "Hannah Montana Destroyed My Family"

Billy Ray Cyrus' life is in shambles, and he's not afraid to blame a tween television show for the mess. The 49-year-old father of famed split personality Miley Cyrus / Hannah Montana tells GQ Magazine he'd now like a take-back.

On why he didn't go to his daughter's 18th birthday party:

"Because they were having it in a bar. It was wrong. It was for 21 year olds and up. Once again all them people, they all wanted me to fly out so that then when all the bad press came they could say, 'Daddy endorsed this stuff....' If I would have went out there I would have been right in the middle of all this stuff that's going on right now with the bong."

Or he could have shown up at the party, not left his daughter unattended and underage in a bar, and kept Miley from hitting the bong. Just sayin'.

On being his children's friends rather than their parent:

"How many interviews did I give and say, 'You know what's important between me and Miley is I try to be a friend to my kids'? I said it a lot. And sometimes I would even read other parents might say, 'You don't need to be a friend, you need to be a parent.' Well, I'm the first guy to say to them right now: You were right. I should have been a better parent. I should have said, 'Enough is enough--it's getting dangerous and somebody's going to get hurt.' I should have, but I didn't."

Hey man, when you're right, you're right.

Taco party is serious bizness

On Hannah Montana's impact on his family:

"Oh, it's huge--it destroyed my family. I'll tell you right now--the damn show destroyed my family. And I sit there and go, 'Yeah, you know what? Some gave all.' It is my motto, and guess what? I have to eat that one. I some-gave-all'd it all right. I some-gave-all'd it while everybody else was going to the bank. It's all sad."

Really? A children's show that brought your family a gabillion dollars is what brought the Cyrus clan down? Please refer to admitted lack of parenting above.

On wishing for a take-back:

"I hate to say it, but yes, I do. Yeah. I'd take it back in a second. For my family to be here and just be everybody okay, safe and sound and happy and normal, would have been fantastic. Heck, yeah. I'd erase it all in a second if I could."

No take backs. Didn't you go to second grade?

On losing unlikely friend Kurt Cobain:

"One more thing about Kurt--Kurt was one of those guys. That's why I'm concerned about Miley. I think that his world was just spinning so fast and he had so many people around him that didn't help him. Like Anna Nicole Smith--you could see that train wreck coming. I was actually trying to reach out to Anna Nicole Smith, because I kept telling Tish and everybody around me, going, 'This is a disaster.'"

Step one to reconciliation with your daughter is not to tie her name to a suicide and an overdose. Nothing says "I support you" like equating your 18-year-old with a pair of train wreck tragedies.

On his fears for Miley:

"I'm scared for her. She's got a lot of people around her that's putting her in a great deal of danger. I know she's 18, but I still feel like as her daddy I'd like to try to help. Take care of her just a little bit, to at least get her out of danger."

Here's a thought: Lose the copy of Michael Lohan's 'How to Be the Worst Parent Ever', shut the hell up (to the press), and go do something about it!

Is Billy Ray full of drama or spot on?

Debate It! 16

This coming from a guy that 1) took a paid role in the show that supposedly ruined their lives, 2) allowed her to date a 20-something underwear model - who also just happened to be one of his proteges - when she was 15, and 3) plugged one of his own craptastic songs in the article ("Some Gave All"). No wonder his daughter is hitting the bong.

Posted By Cobanerd,

If I were him, I'd want a takesies-backsies for that unfortunate mullet.

Posted By Rebecca,

as Disney does.

Posted By SaraMcGinnis,

This guy has some nerve to say something stupid in comparing his daughter to Kurt Cobain. Kurt was an awesome singer!

Posted By Mr.Truther,

In my opinion he's doing this to PLUG HIS GARBAGE! If he really gave a damn IT'S HIS DAMN CHILD! NO amount of lawyers, publicists, or media puppets can stop that! He could have stepped in and do what he has to do in order to control her! But the money was too damn good and he just laid back and pulled a Michael his daugher is going insane and getting high off of some bullsh!t (that really is bullsh!t) and he wanna cry a river for publicity? IM NOT BUYING IT!

@thundercat832 Absolutely... He still has control. Further proving that fame is a horrendous disease and it really messes up kids. I would never let my kids be child stars.

Miley Cyrus has a 49-year old daughter? ;-)

Posted By MarshallStax,

@Marshall - I got it fixed in the post but don't have any access to the header on the front page. You've got a good pair of editing eyes!

Posted By SaraMcGinnis,

@Sara I fixed the excerpt yesterday but let me know if you're still seeing the error.

Posted By roseycyrus,

@Rebecca I'm seeing the "daughter" still on the main page header/banner/picture rotating thingy that I don't know the name for.

Ahhhh, I know what you're talking about. Fixing!

Posted By Charlotte Tha,

why is everyone so mad at Billy Cyrus? I believe him. and even if i didn't, i wouldn't go around spreading rumors and influencing people he is wrong to think that way.

Posted By hellohi,

He's Being a bit dramatic! If you think of other popstars, they all wear less than her and have videos that are more revealing! so in my opinion he's being too dramatic
