This or That Takes a Nosedive
Just before 8am local time this morning, the main database for This or That became unusable, taking our site down for about 4 hours. Our backup and recovery system also failed, resulting in the loss of everything that has been added to the site in the last 5 months. Unfortunately, we will not be able to restore any of the user accounts, content, or data that has not already been restored on the site.

I don't read or watch the news much. I figure that if something important is going on in the world, people will get worked up enough to tell me about it on Facebook. So I totally missed the fact the Rapture is coming up this Saturday, according to one Harold Camping, Christian radio host and former engineer. According to Camping's followers, around 200 million people will be raptured on May 21, roughly 3% of the world's population. They better make sure they have clean underwear on....

Update on the TechStars Startup Madness Tournament
I wanted to update you guys with what's going on with the TechStars Startup Madness tournament. Some folks have complained that some of Round 2's votes appear to be as suspicious as a grown man showing up at a young girl's house to "hang out," only to run into Chris Hanson in the kitchen. Fear not, conspiracy theorists! Your suspicions have been confirmed: there have definitely been some voting inconsistencies.
I wanted to update you guys with what's going on with the TechStars Startup Madness tournament. Some folks have complained that some of Round 2's votes appear to be as suspicious as a grown man showing up at a young girl's house to "hang out," only to run into Chris Hanson in the kitchen. Fear not, conspiracy theorists! Your suspicions have been confirmed: there have definitely been some voting inconsistencies.

Last Monday, This Or That's Rebecca Kelley created a ToT comparing rappers Lil Kim and Nicki Minaj. The two performers have recently traded barbs in their song lyrics and Rebecca wanted to see who our users were pulling for. Full disclosure: I'm a huge fan of Nicki Minaj but don't care much for Lil Kim.

Well, it's Monday, folks, and you know what that means. It's time to announce who won a Macbook Pro for participating in our 10 Days of ToTs Twitter Contest! We had over 4,700 entries for the grand prize, not to mention a bunch of comparisons created, but I'll break down the stats and slam you with some interesting factoids tomorrow. For now, let's unveil the winner!

Oh well, no worries, I'll just mega-size the summaries like I did for Day 1 and 2. Introducing Our First Contest: 10 Days of ToTs on Twitter!
You may have noticed that recently we redesigned the look and feel of This or That (again -- we sure do like to redecorate around here!). Part of the reason for the redesign was to create a more fun user experience, and the other reason was so we could bring you awesome entertainment in the form of contests, tournaments, and more. And wouldn't you know it, Contest Numero Uno has just been unveiled and is currently underway -- it's the 10 Days of ToTs contest on Twitter!

Now that This or That has come out of the closet, it's time to spread news of our website, and what better way to do that than to mingle with other startups at Techcrunch Disrupt. Two ToT employees will be flying to NYC for next week.s show (May 24th . 26th) to demo This or That, spread the good word about what the site does and why people should use it, and to win loyalty by giving out free t-shirts (who doesn't love a free t-shirt?).

We started the company with the goal of quickly making high performance web apps that we can rapidly iterate, and we.re not afraid to be early adopters if we are convinced that.s the way to produce a better experience for our users (plus we like to save money!). To that end, we.ve built our app with heavy use of open source tools.
