No one will believe you if you say you were bitten by a zombie.. but captured by pirates is a real possibility.

If you got bitten by a zombie, they'd probably still make you come in. Getting captured by pirates, on the other hand, means you're actually out of commission.

Well if you were bitten by a zombie it would be a health hazard and they would have to keep you off....however that would only work if your employer has the train of mind comparable to Monty Python.
The pirate excuse is more believable....
